Botanical Name: Hamelia patens var. patens
Common Name: Native Firebush
One of the best native nectar plants for attracting all kinds of pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Firebush blooms beautiful tubular red-orange flowers off and on almost year round. In our usual warm winters it’ll stay evergreen, while in colder winters it’ll go deciduous and sometimes die back to its roots. In Central Florida it’s a fast grower to about 6′ x 6′ in your sun to part sun garden. It doesn’t do well as a sheared shrub. Once established, this is an excellent heat and drought tolerant plant. I always have at least one of these in my gardens.
