Description
Botanical Name: Itea virginica ‘Henry’s Garnet’
Common Name: ‘Henry’s Garnet’ Sweetspire, Virginia Sweetspire
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous little hybrid of a native shrub that is absolutely not grown enough. Did I mention it’s gorgeous?? New growth on this arching 3-4′ tall x 4-5′ wide deciduous shrub is a pretty burgundy color that turns to green as it ages. White, fragrant, bottlebrush-type, nectar filled flowers bloom in early Summer. The leaves then age to red/orange in the Winter. It spreads by suckers, but is nowhere near as aggressive as the native Sweetspire. Very low maintenance shrub for your sun/part sun garden. It’s great for those areas in your garden that stay moist but well drained … say near a downspout or low spot or close to a pond. But they also adapt well to a regular garden situation. Yes, you need this gorgeous plant in your garden.
